How to get a TIN number in Tanzania online, and the new 15 day rule
Apply on the online TIN form at taxpayerportal.tra.go.tz with a National ID, passport or voter ID. Since 1 July 2026 the law says you must apply within 15 days of starting a job or a business, so if you have just been hired, do it this week.

What you need
For a TIN as an individual, TRA asks for one official identification: a National ID, a passport or a voter ID. You don't need a NIDA card in particular if you hold one of the others. Have a clear scan or photo of the ID ready, because TRA says you will upload documents on the form.
This applies to residents and non-residents alike, TRA says. If you want a National ID and don't have one yet, apply through NIDA.
The steps
TRA describes it like this:
- Open the Taxpayer Portal, which is linked from the TRA website.
- Choose the online TIN application form.
- Answer the questions on screen. TRA says you will receive instructions as you go.
- Upload the documents it asks for.
- Keep your TIN and any certificate safe, and give the number to your employer.
We opened the portal on 2 November 2026. Its screens load inside the app and we didn't file a real application, so we don't print each one here. If you get stuck, ask at a TRA office and take your ID with you.
The new 15 day rule
TRA's page speaks of 15 days for a business TIN. The Finance Act 2026, in force from 1 July 2026, puts employment in the same sentence. Section 72 rewrites section 22(1) of the Tax Administration Act: a person who becomes potentially liable to pay tax by reason of employment or carrying on a business or investment shall apply for a TIN within fifteen days from the date of commencing such activity.
You start work on Tuesday 10 November 2026. Fifteen days from that date is 25 November 2026. Apply before then, and tell HR when you have the number.
The Act says potentially liable, and it doesn't set a pay level. Monthly pay up to TZS 270,000 carries no PAYE, so if you are on very low pay and wonder if this touches you, ask TRA. We didn't check what happens to people who miss the date, so ask TRA if you already have.
A TIN for a job or a TIN for a business?
TRA's page starts both from the online form, but a business asks for more. TRA says you attach a letter from your Local Government Authority and a lease agreement or title deed for the business location. Once the TIN certificate is issued, you go through an assessment interview for tax. You don't need any of that for a TIN you want because you got a job.
If you already have a TIN, don't apply for a second one. TRA's page tells trustees that a TIN they already hold is the one to use, and if you aren't sure if you ever got one, it is safer to ask TRA first.
Does it cost anything?
The TRA pages we read don't list a fee for an individual TIN. If somebody offers to get one for you for money, ask TRA before you pay, and don't hand over your ID to a stranger. The same goes for job offers: applying for a job is free, and our job scam check takes two minutes.
After you have your TIN
Your employer deducts PAYE from your pay and sends it to TRA. A few other things are worth sorting out in your first weeks:
- Check your NSSF balance, so you know your contributions arrive.
- Read your first payslip, and test it in the take-home pay calculator.

Maswali yanayoulizwa mara kwa mara
Can I get a TIN without a NIDA card?
Yes. TRA lists a National ID, a passport or a voter ID as the identification you need.
Do students need a TIN?
The 15 day rule starts when you begin a job, business or investment. Studying alone isn't on that list. An employer may still ask for your TIN when you start work.
I started work before 1 July 2026. Does the rule apply to me?
The Act speaks of the date you commence the activity and took effect on 1 July 2026. If you have no TIN yet, apply now and ask TRA about your case.
How long does it take?
TRA doesn't state a time on the pages we read, so don't leave it to the last day.
