Kariakoo: trade and retail

Kariakoo is the city's best-known trading district. The Kariakoo Market Corporation announced that its rebuilt market would reopen to traders from February 2025. Shops and wholesalers around it hire sales staff, cashiers, store keepers and drivers. Many of these jobs are never advertised online, so ask the business directly and never pay anyone for a placement.

Kurasini: the port and container depots

Kurasini, in Temeke District, sits next to the port. Licensed inland container depots operate in the Kurasini Industrial Area about 1 km from the port terminals, alongside clearing and forwarding firms. Typical roles are tally clerks, forklift operators, drivers, documentation officers and security staff. Shift work is common, so ask about night shifts and transport home.

The city centre and Posta

The city centre has many office employers, and DART plans its rapid bus phases around it: the second runs from Mbagala Rangi Tatu to the city centre and the third from the city centre to Gongo la Mboto. When an agency advert gives only "Dar es Salaam", ask whether the office is in the centre or on the outskirts before you plan the commute.

Plan your route by corridor

DART's first rapid bus phase is 21.5 km long; check DART for the routes currently in service. The trunk fare is TZS 1,000 and the feeder fare TZS 500. For daladala routes, LATRA fares from 1 May 2026 start at TZS 700 for up to 10 km. Put the workplace and your home on a map and price both options before the interview.

Never pay to apply, to be shortlisted or to be placed. If an agency advert does not name the employer, ask for the company name, the work address and the role reference before you travel. For public service posts, apply only through the official portal named in the advert.
