Public-service salary scales: what an advert code tells you
A salary-scale code is useful evidence, but it is not a cash figure. Keep the code exactly as published until a current authorised table or written offer confirms the amount.
Read the entire remuneration line
A public-service advert may identify a salary scale without listing shillings. Record the employer, grade, publication date and role reference together. Similar-looking codes from different institutions must not be treated as equivalent.
Codes you will meet in 2026 adverts
Each employer group prints its own family of codes. Central and local government posts use TGS codes: Mbozi District Council advertised a driver at TGS B1 and an office management secretary at TGS C. Public university adverts use PUTS and PUSS codes: PUTS 1.1 for a tutorial assistant at the University of Dodoma, PUSS 2/1 for a laboratory technician at the University of Dar es Salaam. Public corporations keep their own scales: the TANESCO advert of 13 October 2026 put Artisan Grade II posts at TSS 2. Zanzibar government adverts use ZPSG and ZPSI codes, such as ZPSG-02 for an assistant records officer.
The letters tell you whose structure the post sits on, and the number tells you the level on it. Neither tells you the amount. TSS 2 at TANESCO and TGS B at a council are different structures, so do not compare them as if they were the same scale.
Separate eligibility from pay
The qualification required for a role does not establish the employee's step on a salary scale. Avoid converting a diploma, degree or years of experience into a salary unless the employer provides a rule that supports it.
Ask for the missing breakdown
Before accepting an appointment, request the basic monthly amount, scale and step, fixed allowances, conditional allowances, pension scheme and other deductions. Ask when the stated terms take effect.
Why we leave some amounts blank
An old blog table can look precise while referring to a different year or institution. Work.tz does not turn an unverified table into a current salary claim. A visible gap is more useful than a confident invented number.
Use the original notice as your record
Save the complete advert, including its general conditions. Compare the remuneration wording with the appointment letter and ask the issuing institution to resolve a discrepancy. The examples below are source wording, not independently verified current cash salaries.
