How to check your NSSF balance in Tanzania by SMS, WhatsApp, app or portal

The quickest way is by SMS: send NSSF BALANCE, your member number and the year to 15200. You can also send Hello to 0756 140 140 on WhatsApp, use the NSSF Taarifa app, or log in to the Member Portal on nssf.go.tz. All four show what your employer has actually paid in.

By SMS, on any phone

Open your messages and send one of these to 15200. Put your own member number and the year you want.

What to type, to 15200
For your balance: NSSF BALANCE (Member Number) (Year)
For your statement: NSSF STATEMENT (Member Number) (Year)
In Kiswahili: NSSF SALIO (Namba ya Mwanachama) (Mwaka)
In Kiswahili: NSSF TAARIFA (Namba ya Mwanachama) (Mwaka)

The brackets only show you where each part goes. If you don't know your member number, ask HR or your nearest NSSF office. We did not send a test message, because it needs a real member number.

On WhatsApp

  • Save 0756 140 140 in your phone.
  • Open WhatsApp and send Hello or Habari to that number.
  • You will get a message explaining how it works.
  • Send Balance for your balance, or Statement for all the contributions received.

In the NSSF Taarifa app

Download NSSF Taarifa from the Google Play Store. NSSF says it shows your membership details, your contributions and your balance. Tap Statements to see the contributions received.

On the Member Portal

Go to www.nssf.go.tz and open the Member Portal. You can see all contributions your employer has sent, or that you sent yourself as a voluntary member, and get statements.

You need the phone number you registered with NSSF. If you changed your number or never gave one, NSSF asks you to visit your nearest office and update your details.

What to look for

Your statement is only useful if you compare it with your payslips. Go month by month, and check that the employer paid for every month you worked and that the amounts fit your wage.

Example: a wage of TZS 800,000 at 10% and 10%
Taken from your pay: TZS 80,000
Employer's share on top: TZS 80,000
What your statement should show for the month: TZS 160,000
After 12 months: TZS 1,920,000

NSSF sets the joint contribution at 20% of wages, with your share at no more than 10%. Some employers use 15% and 5%, and some pay all of it, so check your contract. There's no wage cap in the Act. The NSSF contributions guide explains the rest, and the take-home pay calculator shows how it changes what you keep.

If your employer deducts and doesn't pay it in

This happens, and it's your employer's failure, not yours. NSSF asks you to:

  • Give NSSF the employer's name, your member number, the region the employer is in, your start date and your phone number.
  • Take the matter to your nearest NSSF office and see a Compliance Officer.
  • Or file a complaint in the complaints box at any NSSF office, by email to customercare@nssf.go.tz, or on the free line 0800116773.

The law adds a penalty of 5% of the unpaid amount for each month or part of a month. On TZS 160,000 unpaid that is TZS 8,000 a month, charged to the employer. Keep your payslips: they show the money left your pay. If the problem is part of a wider dispute with your employer, read about taking a complaint to the CMA.

Who this page isn't for

NSSF covers the private sector and the self-employed on the Mainland. Public servants belong to PSSSF, so these numbers won't help them. If you work in Zanzibar, ask your employer which fund you are in. If you move from a private job to the public service, section 98 of the Act moves your membership to PSSSF. Between jobs?
