RITA birth certificate verification online: fee, steps and when a job application needs it
Verifying a birth certificate on the e-RITA portal costs TZS 6,000. Go to erita.rita.go.tz, choose Certificate Verification, and give the certificate number or application code, the name of the applicant and the year of the event. You then pay with a GePG control number.

The official fees
These are on the e-RITA home page, for birth and death certificates, as read on 2 November 2026:
- Certificate verification: TZS 6,000.
- Duplicate certificate, if yours is lost or damaged: TZS 7,000.
- Correction of a name, date or other detail: TZS 13,000.
- New birth certificate: from TZS 7,000, depending on your case.
- Tracking your application: free.

These are the only amounts on RITA's page. If someone asks you for more to speed it up, ask RITA first.
Steps to verify a certificate
The portal asks you to look at the requirements and fees before you sign in to your account.
- Go to erita.rita.go.tz and sign in.
- Choose Certificate Verification.
- Enter the certificate number or application code, then the applicant's name and the year of the event.
- Get your GePG control number and pay it by M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money, HaloPesa, or at a bank such as NMB, CRDB, NBC or Azania.
- Follow your application with Track Application Status on the home page.
We read the public pages of the portal and didn't file an application, so the screens behind the sign in may word this a little differently.
What is the verification code people ask about?
The portal doesn't use the words verification code on its home page. It uses two numbers. The Application Code looks like RITA-2026-7842, and the GePG Control Number looks like 991080048291. Both of those are RITA's own examples. You need both to track an application, and you get them when you apply.
If an employer asks you for a verification code, ask which of these they mean, or what they will accept as proof.
How long it takes
RITA says a standard birth or death certificate application typically takes 24 to 48 hours after payment. The home page shows an average completion time of under 48 hours. It doesn't give a separate time for verification alone, so leave yourself several days before a closing date.
Payments usually show within minutes. If the status hasn't changed after 30 minutes, RITA says to check again with Track Application Status, or to contact RITA Support with your receipt. You get an SMS and a portal notice when your certificate is ready for collection at your district office or for download.
Why job applications care
PSRS notices list your birth certificate among the certified copies you must attach, and RITA says verification exists for use in other government services, employment, education and legal procedures. PSRS also checked 80,481 certificates with NECTA, RITA and TRA in the period the 2026/27 budget speech reports, and found 52 forged.
The notice we read doesn't say that you must buy a verification yourself. It asks for the certified copy. So read your own notice, or ask the employer, before you pay for something you may not need. What you do need is a certificate whose name matches your other documents. See application documents for PSRS and the full picture on government jobs.
If something on the certificate is wrong or lost
- Wrong name or date: choose Certificate Correction, TZS 13,000. Attach a scan of the certificate with the error and legal proof, such as an affidavit, a hospital birth notification or a government ID. The Registrar checks it.
- Lost or damaged: choose Duplicate Certificate, TZS 7,000. Give your old certificate number or application record and your NIDA ID, and upload a police loss report or an affidavit.
- Never had one: for a birth certificate RITA asks for a notification of birth from the hospital and a parent's ID, and more documents for a late registration.
Do this early. A correction started the week an advert closes may not finish in time. Note the date in the application tracker, and look at government jobs in Tanzania so you know what is coming.
A note on Zanzibar
We read RITA's pages only. If your certificate was issued in Zanzibar, ask the office that issued it how to verify it.
