Overtime hours this month

Type your pay and your overtime hours to see what they should come to.

Overtime needs your agreement. The Act allows at most 50 overtime hours in any four week cycle and at most 12 hours of work in a day, overtime included.

The hours rules leave out employees who manage other employees and report directly to a senior manager (section 17). Mainland only. The sum uses basic wage, which leaves out allowances. Your contract can pay more than the law, never less.

The sum goes like this. A 45 hour week is 195 hours a month (45 x 52 / 12). TZS 600,000 divided by 195 is TZS 3,076.92 an hour. Time and a half is TZS 4,615.38, so ten hours comes to TZS 46,154. Double pay for eight hours comes to TZS 49,231. The wage used is basic wage, not gross, so leave out your allowances.

What the law says

Section 19 of the Employment and Labour Relations Act sets at most six days and 45 hours a week, nine hours a day, and 12 hours a day with overtime. Overtime needs your agreement, and it can't pass 50 hours in any four week cycle. Section 19(5) says overtime pays not less than one and a half times your basic wage.

Work on your rest day is only by agreement and pays double your hourly basic wage (section 24). Work on a public holiday pays double for each hour worked (section 25).

Why our figure can differ by a few shillings

The Act's own table divides a monthly wage by 4.333 times weekly hours, which gives 194.985 hours and TZS 46,157 for the same ten hours. This tool uses 195 hours, which matches the hourly figures printed in the 2025 minimum wage order. The gap is about 24 cents an hour. If your employer's payslip differs by a few shillings, this is probably why.

Night hours are extra

From 20:00 to 06:00 the Act adds at least 5% of your basic wage for each hour. On TZS 600,000 that's TZS 153.85 an hour. If those hours are also overtime, the 5% is worked out on the overtime rate, which makes it TZS 230.77 an hour. The tool doesn't add this, so add it yourself.

If your employer doesn't pay it

Keep your own record of dates and hours, and compare it with your payslip. Ask in writing first. A labour dispute can go to the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration, and our CMA guide gives the forms and the time limits.

Questions people ask

Is overtime taxed?

For private sector staff, yes. TRA counts it as employment income, so the amount here is before tax. TRA excludes overtime allowance only for government employees and bodies mostly funded by Government.

Can my boss make me work overtime?

The Act says overtime is by agreement. Check your contract and any collective agreement, because they may set out how that agreement works.

Do managers get overtime?

Section 17 leaves out employees who manage other employees and report directly to a senior manager. Your contract can still give it.
